The Awakened Heart Sangha was founded in 2003 by Lama Shenpen Hookham. Sangha is a Buddhist word meaning spiritual community. The Awakened Heart Sangha follows the meditation practices and teachings of the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages of Tibetan Buddhism.
Our founder and Spiritual Director Lama Shenpen Hookham has been a practitioner in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition for over 50 years and spent more than 12 years in meditation retreat. Lama Shenpen has received meditation instruction and Buddhist teachings from many senior Tibetan Lamas, including H.H the 16th Karmapa and her main teacher – Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche.
The Awakened Heart Sangha is an international practice community providing training in meditation and Buddhism through local groups, home study courses, online seminars and courses, and at our retreat centre in North Wales: The Hermitage of the Awakened Heart.
Our teachings draw on the very heart of traditional Tibetan Buddhism but communicate them in a form easily accessible for western practitioners using everyday language and without the need for previous meditation experience or knowledge of Buddhism.
Our emphasis is providing a genuine, living connection to a vibrant spiritual tradition through the transmission of the heart of meditation. This is achieved between teachers and students in the context of a supportive spiritual community.
